Free Basic Website Design Tutorial:
Why Having a Website is Vital to your Business?
This article discusses the importance of having a website for your business and shows you how to design a basic one for yourself. By following the few easy steps described herein, even if you don’t have any experience in website design, you will be able to design your own in as less as twenty minutes and make it go live on the Internet right away.
Either you are already a business owner or just thinking about starting one, owning an effectively designed website provides you with great business and strategic marketing opportunities that you would miss out otherwise. Your website eliminates the hassle and inconvenience caused by long distances between your business’ physical location and your targeted markets. It brings you closer to your consumers regardless of their geographic locations; you can reach people in your own neighborhood, in many remote places, or as far as overseas.
Therefore, market segments that would be inaccessible will be available to you through your online presence. If your website is strategically designed to reflect the greatness of your unique types of business, products, or services, it will become an everlasting selling tool for you, which will reduce or eliminate the cost associated with advertising, selling, acquiring customers, and creating solid business relationships.
In brief, your website is an advertising tool that brings customers to your offer for free. It connects you with the entire world. Most importantly, when you design it yourself, you acquire important technical knowledge and save money on the cost of paying someone else to build it for you. When you build it through this free tutorial, the cost you might have to deal with is a small annual cost of hosting your site, which is way less than the traditional web design and advertisement costs.
Another cost that would come with the privilege of owning a website has something to do with hiring someone for maintaining it and updating content from time to time. In fact, you won’t have to hire anyone to do these tasks for you, if you learn how to do them yourself, which will get to save money. (This site provides you with most of the essential information that will enable you to learn how to build website, maintain it, and bring traffic right to it).
In this tutorial, you are going to learn how to design a website using templates, as opposed to building it from scratch, which save you time and money. It is more costly and time consuming to design a website from scratch.
Your website has the advantage of being accessible to your audience 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, and 365 days per year. It works around the clock and keeps working for you across time zones promoting and selling your products even while your physical store is closed. It gives you an opportunity to brand yourself, gain the credibility of your customers. With a blog site, you get to receive feedback from customers and present them with testimonials about what other buyers have said about you and your products, or services in the past.
Moreover, your website can be linked to social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Google +, and so on, to allow you to reach even more prospect customers. If you have great content and an irresistible product or service on your website, visitors to your site will share your site’s link with thousands of other people in their social media network. By sharing your link, they bring customers to your site for free.
How to Design your Basic Website
Now, let’s get into the actual step by step tutorial and show you how to effectively design your straightforward website, as stated earlier. Depending on your business needs and your preferences, this is a website that you can keep as it is once you finish building it, or expend and customize it later on as you please.
To build your website, you will need to sign up for a domain name registration and for hosting services with a hosting company such as iPage, Goddady, Boosthoster, Shopify, etc. A hosting company is the firm that actually places and saves your website on the Internet.
Thus, you will have to choose from any of these hosting companies and select a platform like WordPress, SquareSpace, or any other platforms you might find out there. In addition to all these and depending on your sort of business, you will want to determine what kind of website you want to use for your sort of business. Is it going to be a blog website or a regular website?
In fact, making decisions about all these is not easy because you have so many options available in the market, but the choice is still yours to make. It really depends on what you want to accomplish. So, when designing your website, keep in mind that it should be built to fit your personality and your business’ vision.
While this is a free lesson, you still need to pay for your domain name and your website hosting needs directly to one of the hosting companies. Generally, all hosting companies offer low fees, but iPage offers the best deals with annual fees as low as $30.00 to $180.00, depending on how many features or essentials you want to add to your site. This is because they offer domain name registration for free and have many various discounts.
Actually, the domain name is the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) of your website. It is also referred to as the web address. You can either come up with your own domain name such as www.mybusiness-example.com, or buy an existing one from any domain name vendors.
However, while all the options mentioned earlier are available in the market for you to choose from, in the scope of this tutorial session, you will want to go with iPage and design a blogging website on a WordPress platform. This is because this free lesson is designated to help those who are on a lower investment budget to take advantage of iPage’s lower fees, high quality features, and great customer services. Their Customer Service Department is open 24 hours per day and 7 days a week.
Another advantage is that unlike other hosting companies, iPage provides both domain name and hosting services, and thus allowing you to have both services with only one single company. iPage also has a one-click installer for WorkPress platform on their admin panel, which will get you to install WordPress on your blog easily.
Unlike other web hosting companies, there is no 24 or 48 hour propagation time. From the moment you finish designing your website, propagation time is the time it takes for your site to go live on the Internet. Through iPage, your blog site will be live on the web as soon as you finish it. With some other hosting companies, this propagation process usually takes 24 to 48 hours from the time you are done building your site.
Furthermore, starting a WordPress blogging site is an easier and effective way to communicate with your customers, be interactive with them, and build long lasting relationships. WordPress is a free and high performance platform that comes with beautiful free theme templates you can chose from.
Even though some website theme vendors might sell some better themes, you don’t have to buy one from them, unless you really want an extremely fancy one. Really, blogging with WordPress platform is a great way to start your business marketing journey. If you don’t have a website yet, or just want to learn how to design a basic one, here is your opportunity to learn by following these easy steps.
Let’s get started!
Step 1: Choose your domain name.
Step 2: Choose your type of website, hosting company, and platform. (In this tutorial, we are using iPage and WordPress blogging.)
Step 4: To install WordPress on iPage, click on this link www.ipage.com (by using this link, you get a free domain name registration as part of this free lesson. Once you get to the iPage’s “Home” page, click on “Sign up Now” as shown below.
Step 5: On the next page, select a domain name registration option (You have an option to create a new domain name or use an existing one).
Then, enter your preferred domain name into the text box below and click “Check Availability.” A message will come up telling you if your chosen domain name is available or not. If it is, you will be lead to the next screen. Conversely, if it is not, you will have to keep trying different domain names until you get one that is available.
Step 6: Enter your personal information such as name, address, phone number, and so on. Then, select your payment method.
Step 7: Enter your preferences.
– In the “Purchase Information Window,” select your preferred hosting term such as a 1, 2, or 3 year payment term.
– Check the “Domain Privacy” box if you want your blog website to be completely private. This is optional and it cost $9.99. It is a very important feature; it protects you from identity depth. However, if you don’t want it, uncheck this box, and you won’t have to pay this particular fee.
– Then, from the “Website Essentials” options, every option that you select will add costs to the overall amount you will be paying every year for your site. You pay this amount when you first create your blog website. Then, the same amount will be billed to you every year, which is extremely low given the high performance and other benefits you get from your blog.
– If you are on a low budget, you might want to only select the “iPage Essential Hosting Plan” and check the “Domain Privacy” box, which will only add up to about $33.87 per year. However, if you want extra protections for your blog, feel free to add some more, or all of the “Website Essentials” shown below. You just need to check the box next to those options. Remember, the hosting cost goes up with each essential option you choose.
Step 8: Please note that…
– Selecting the “WPE” (Word Press Essential)” option in the image above provides you with more security protection, higher speed, a greater range of themes and plugins to choose from, and much more.
– Adding the “Advanced Site Protection and Performance accelerator” is also optional, but it would be a good idea as gives you increased protection and higher speed to your site.
– As stated earlier, you can also choose not to use any of these essentials, if you don’t think that the information on your site is important enough for extra protection.
Step 9: Once you are done selecting your ‘website essential’ options, click “Check Out” as shown below. Please note that the total hosting price went up to $89.82 per year in this example because three of the website essentials were selected. If, you choose all of them, the price will be higher than that. However, if you don’t select them at all, you only pay approximately $33.87 per year.
At this point, your registration is done, but you still want to complete some more steps to actually design your site and make it live.
Step 10: After submitting your information, iPage will send you an email asking you to verify your email address by following the link provided within that email. Just follow the prompts step by step. (You really need to do this step right away, because if you don’t, your domain name registration will be cancelled within 15 days from the day you actually registered. If you don’t see the email from iPage in your Inbox, check you junk mail box)
Then, once you verify your email address, log into your iPage account, which is also your control panel (iPage should have also sent you your login information via email. Make sure to check your email right away and create your own password.)
Step 11: From the options available to you in your control panel, click on the “WordPress” icon, to select it as your website platform and start building your website on your domain name. (You can also choose other options as your website platform, but Word Press is known to be the best platform for blogging.
Step 12: Use the “WordPress Installation with One Click” tool. To be able to do this, you will get to “Mojo Marketplace,” where you will have an option to install your WordPress for free, using only one click installation button as shown below. Once you are on this page, just click on the “Install” button.
Step 13: Then, in the next window, select your domain name from the dropdown menu. Leave the textbox after the slash (/) blank, because if you type in something such as “WordPress,” your domain name will be installed on a domain name controlled by WordPress.
In this case, your domain name will look like this: www.domain-name-example.net/WordPress. You really don’t want your URL to be showing like this to your visitors. Leaving it blank allows you to install your site straight to your own domain. So, just click the “Check Domain” like in this image to begin the installation process.
Step 14: On the next page, you might see a message telling you that “there are existing files at that location.” This might just be the default index.html page. Ignore this message, leave everything alone on this page and click “Continue.”
Step 15: On the next window, select both options, read the terms and conditions, and then check the “I Agree with the terms and conditions” box. After that, click “install Now.”
Step 16: The screen shown below will come up telling you that your WordPress is being set up.
Step 17: Once WordPress is installed on your domain, you will also receive an email message telling you that it is installed. To make sure that it is actually installed, log into your control panel and scroll down until you see the “Your Recent WordPress Installs” box showing your domain name like it shows down here. Once you see this, you are done building your blog website.
Step 18: Now that you are done building your website, you can start editing it as desired and adding contents. (At this point, your website is like a house with no furniture and no decoration. You still have to furnish it with all kinds of household goodies and decorate it.) Similarly, your site needs some add-ons, a theme, colors, plugins, and so on to make it be more functional, and look professional.) So, your site comes with a plain default theme, if you want to change it, log into your site’s Dashboard, and click on “Appearance.” Then, on the submenu click “Theme.” (Think of your dashboard as the back office of you blog website, or the “behind the scene” of you site.)
Note: Once you click on “Themes” as shown up here, you will get to a screen where you can choose one of the free themes (designs) shown below. (If none of these themes are not of interest to you, scroll down to see more themes.)
Step 19: Select the theme you like from the available options and then click “Live Preview” (the blue button) to see how it is going to look like, and then click “Activate” (the white button) as shown it this image.
Step 20: On the next page click on “Customize” as in this image.
Step 21: Additionally, if you want to customize the color, the text size, or the layout of the text on your site, just click on “Appearance,” and then on “Customize” as you see in the image below.
Note: Besides these free themes, there are paid themes available to you under the “Marketplace” tab as shown here.
Step 22: Once you are done making a change, click “Save & Activate” in the upper left corner of the screen, just like in the image below. After each action you take on your site to customize it, you should save and activate each time by clicking on this button. Please not that you can change the theme of your website anytime without losing any of its contents.
Note: As you can see, the menu for formatting and customizing your website is located on the left side of the screen bellow. Everything on this menu is under the “Customize” tab on your dashboard. If you are a beginner in Web Design, start by changing the colors and the background images, and then move to more advanced customization later on.
For your information, as I was preparing this Tutorial, I was building a website along the way to illustrate what I am coaching about. Below is a screenshot of the resulting website that I just created. I did not add any content to this site yet, but it is live on the internet already. I can add articles, images, or whatever I want in the future. (What I am trying to say is that once you finish designing your blog website, you still have a lot to do. You still need to add contents that add value to your site.)
